How to tell which one you have

Run your fingernail lightly across a spot. If it feels completely smooth and the mark is purely visual, it's likely mineral deposits. If you can feel a slight texture change, or the spots don't respond at all to a basic detailing spray, you're probably dealing with etching.

Why this distinction matters for the fix

Mineral deposits usually need an acidic water-spot remover or a vinegar-based solution, sometimes with light agitation — straightforward, low risk.
Etched spots need actual paint correction (machine polishing) to level the clear coat back down around the etching, which is a completely different process, tool, and skill level.

Treating etched spots with a spray-on remover will do nothing, and treating mineral deposits with aggressive polishing is overkill that creates unnecessary risk to your clear coat.
